The training of Defense
How to have a strong defense?
Lets start with the beginning...what skills does a defender need to be the best?

Defender - determines the capacity of a player to successfully tackle the ball.
Pace - fast speed helps a defender catch the opposition or the ball.
Passing - helps the defender to build up the play and provide his team mates with good balls after he tackles.
Technique - determines how well a player can control the ball and dribble. Bad technique can provide good balls for the opposition.
Playmaker - gives the quality and speed of the decisions taken by the player during game play.
Stamina - A tired player looses his qualities during game play.

Off course defenders can be good without having all of these skills but an exceptional defender will have at least some of the secondary skills needed.

The base skills are DEFENDER and PACE

Step 1 - you will need a coach!
Now having a limited budget will only allow you to have a coach that has 1 or maximum 2 skills unearthly. You need to remember that the lower the wage ...the better. (around 6-7k is enough as the main coach wage budget...the lower the better)
If you are planning to be a defender trainer you will have to check that you have the appropriate coach when you start...if not...you need to get one.
You need a coach that is unearthly at defender and pace.

Step 2 - you will need trainees
Players are best trained between 16 and 23 years old...but I do not advise you to buy players that are over 20 to start training them because they will train harder and the investment will not be so good.

Lets see the age qualification:

16-17 - At this age they only need to have just a bit from all the skills mentioned above (around average) because they have a lot of time to develop.
18-19 - Now the player should show signs that he can become a grate player (an 18 years old player with average skills is not considered to be a developed player). You will need them to be at least good at defender and pace and have some secondary skills as well, or good defense with adequate pace and some more extra skills.

Step 3 - Tactics
If you want to train defenders you can train maximum 10 a week (full training) but that is only if you play the league match and a friendly match and you line up a tactic with 5 defenders in each game.
Remember this: training is based on the players orders (in this case DEF) that you set from the squad panel not on his position on the pitch. That means you can play a defensive mid position with DEF order or even a striker ...its your tactic ...just make sure you have 5 players (not more or less) on the pitch with DEF order set.

Bonus tactical tip:
The defensive mid needs to be a bit more complex then the rest as he needs to also have the secondary skills quite high.
The side defenders need to run, tackle, control and pass the ball...same for the central defenders but they need to tackle, run, control and pass...get it?

Thanks for reading...yours truly the U21 Coach,

The 2 Teams

You should have 22 players in a squad. 11 main players that you play your league games with and another 11 for friendlies.

The second team is where the real action lays! There you should have your future prospects, money makers and backups!

How to pick your first 11

You must choose the best players in each position. After doing a bit of research I have found the following formulas for each position on the pitch (they are only estimates). This helps you identify what skills are required for each position and how important stamina and form is:

Each player adds up to 100% (with 5% stamina)!

Form applies for all positions affecting them by 15% from each skill.

Stamina - has a 5% effect ...but be aware it can be tricky not to have stamina.

I will not go into how exactly the form and stamina affect the final skills as the calculations become quite complicated.

Just keep this in mind:

GK

most important skill - Keeper [55%]
secondary skills - Pace [20%] - Passing [20%]

Central DEF

most important skill - Defender [35%]
secondary skills - Pace [20%] - Technique, Passing [15%] - Playmaker [10%]

Wing Back

most important skill - Defender [30%]
secondary skills - Pace [25%] - Technique [20%] - Passing, Playmaker [10%]

Sweeper or Defensive Midfielder with DEF order

most important skill - Defender [35%]
secondary skills - Playmaker [25%] - Passing [15%] - Pace, Technique [10%]

Defensive Mid

most important skill - Playmaker [30%]
secondary skills - Passing [20%] - Defender, Pace, Technique [15%]

Central Midfielder

most important skill - Playmaker [35%]
secondary skills - Passing [25%] - Technique [15%] - Defender, Pace [10%]

Attacking Midfielder

most important skill - Playmaker [30%]
secondary skills - Passing [25%] - Technique [15%] - Pace, Striker [10%] - Defender [5%]

Winger

most important skill - Pace [25%]
secondary skills - Passing, Playmaker [20%] - Technique [15%] - Defender [10%] - Striker [5%]

Forward or midfielder with ATT order

most important skill - Striker, Pace [25%]
secondary skills - Playmaker, Passing [15%] - Technique [10%] - Defender [5%]

Striker

most important skill - Striker [35%]
secondary skills - Pace [25%] - Technique [15%] - Playmaker [10%] - Passing, Defender [5%]

OK what about 2nd team? - The money maker!

When you are selecting your second game lineup you should concentrate on what players you are training, ignoring his best position. For example if you have a player that is definitely a striker but you are training Technique - with mid orders, you can still play him in his position on the field according to the tactics but make sure you set him with MID orders so that he gets full training.

Awww...but if I train anything except stamina or pace I can not fully train my second lineup!!!...

That is how you make money each season. Sell them at the right time! When you switch training you should sell the extra players that will not benefit from the new training plan. This way the player may develop at another team and selling him when he still has potential will get you a good amount of money (u21 players with high potential sell for loads of cash). They don't need to look like stars...here is a simple example:
I train defenders. But I have in my second lineup 2 players that have the potential to become good strikers:
I bought ...for 213 001 £

Alfonso Renne , age 19
value: 81 600 £
wage: 915 £
solid [8] form
height: 190 cm, weight: 81.1 kg,
BMI: 22.45

unsatisfactory [2] stamina hopeless [1] keeper
very good [9] pace poor [3] defender
average [5] technique adequate [6] playmaker
solid [8] passing very good [9] striker

and...for 6 000 £

Gervasio Barriola , age 19
value: 92 850 £
wage: 825 £
unearthly [16] form
height: 177 cm, weight: 68 kg,
BMI: 21.72

unsatisfactory [2] stamina unsatisfactory [2] keeper
very good [9] pace weak [4] defender
good [7] technique poor [3] playmaker
very good [9] passing good [7] striker

I decided to switch training to defense when they get 3 pops in pace (also because my defenders mostly need pace training). I will then sell them...and they will look like this:

Will list for 400 000 £ - and he will sell for sure.

Alfonso Renne , age 20

unsatisfactory [2] stamina hopeless [1] keeper
outstanding [12] pace poor [3] defender
average [5] technique adequate [6] playmaker
solid [8] passing very good [9] striker

and...
will list for 200 000 £ - and he will also sell

Gervasio Barriola , age 20

unsatisfactory [2] stamina unsatisfactory [2] keeper
outstanding [12] pace weak [4] defender
good [7] technique poor [3] playmaker
very good [9] passing good [7] striker

I will have 381 000 £ profit - if they sell just for the listed price...but it can go higher!

At this time you can have just 5 players in your second lineup - this way also saving money on salary. When you go back to training pace...you buy another 6 players...and then sell them again.

To make it short...if you use this selling and buying strategy you will optimize your salaries costs and also be active on the TL making money each season (if you train pace half of the season and something else for the rest). The money can be used to buy better trainees and also to survive in the lower league. In 2 seasons you will be buying players worth over 1mill on the TL.

Give it a try!
