Thema: Players position in the field

I must say that , even if i am rather old in the game , i cannot understand how the players position themselves on the court depending on tactics. What exactly happens ? Suppose the ball is in the center of the court and i am attacking , the players move one center forward ? Is this true ? Can someone please explain what exactly happens ?
