Hmmmm Springbok here is a bit more expensive! It is about £40 a kg here...

ooh. Had a big debate with my beer pals, apparently Namibia has a mental brewing culture due to their former German occupancy. Is this true?

it is! everything is brewed to reinheitsgebot. and costs around 70p a bottle. Windhoek is my favourite, although Tafel is also pretty good. check it out windhoek beer

the adds are almost amusing too

It was the Tafel they were raving about! To take away the tastes of some worm/grub thing they had eaten...

I was fond of DAS beer. I took the description as a 'breakfast beer' quite literally.
2009-06-15 15:39:35
that sounds great too. I could do with a breakfast beer or two...

It is something ridiculously light, 2.7% or so, but quite tasty nonetheless.

I drank gallons of the stuff.

that would be the mopane worms then
2009-06-15 16:54:37
where was this then?
2009-06-15 17:08:02
South Africa.

they said that they would rather eat their own eyes if there was a choice, I doubted it...
2009-06-15 19:15:42
i eat them every couple of months when there is a new kid in town, or when i'm in the north and get offered them. the taste is ok, but the psycological aspect of eating a worm is difficult.
i had rhino beatle larvae too which look better but taste worse

living in jungles made me learn to eat what I am given as you might not get any more for a bit. I suppose the big plus of jungles is that there is always loads of fish - some is still truly nasty though.
2009-06-15 21:17:55
ah we don't get that up here in namibia. all beer is breakfast beer here, although i guess sorgam beer is the real breakfast beer especially in the north
2009-06-17 21:10:14
i think the namibian breweries are co-owned (or something) by heiniken, at least, windhoek tastes a lot like heiniken (to me)
2009-06-18 12:11:12
Heineken, and Carlsberg, are probably my favourite beers simply because of their worldwide penetration. I don't think I've been on a single trip, from Arctic Norway to Southern Argentina or California to Sydney via the Middle East where I haven't drunk at least one of each..
I'm fairly sure we even had Heineken in Moscow in 1977. And I was only a child then.

On topic though, uh... I'm on the friendly list.
