We can only say that the unearthly skill might be low and the magical high, but this cannot really be the deal: paying more and not getting anything better.

I think with general training it depends more about your assistants general skill than main coaches individual skills. So that's why one individual skill here and there means nothing with head coach.
Looking at the rules it seems general training is done the exact same way as main skill training with it being the main coaches level at each skill plus a modifier from assistants. It makes more sense like that as well.
